When did you start doing CrossFit?

July 5, 2018 - walked in and signed up for the year.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

Getting old and fat.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I have my PhD in Biomechanics from Auburn University. War Eagle!!!

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

PR or ER....no just kidding. Slow and steady...every time I read the tortoise and the hare, the tortoise always wins!

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

Love the 6:30 am crew (Jeff, Corey, John, Kyle, Kathy, Liv, and Coach Addison). In my first year I did a WOD every weekday except Christmas Day since the gym was closed. That totaled 261 WODS for the year. It was actually a few more due to some Saturday WODs. With my work travel I visited 34 affiliates in addition to Coyote. I stopped getting T-shirts after the first 10 since my closet was just CrossFit T shirts. So far I am 22/22 for Year 2 as of this email. Trying to repeat for Year 2.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Most definitely. Feel better (well besides the muscle soreness). More energy. The wife likes the improvements ;)

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

Married to the best wife ever, Joanna. Have three wonderful kids, Jayden, Jordyn, Jaxson. When not home mowing grass and taking care of the farm animals (horse, two goats, pig, seven chickens, house cat, house dog & barn cats), I am busy at work as an Insurance Adjuster.

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

Meredith, just shoot me now!

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

To stop getting old and fat.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

Not any younger age wise but feel a lot younger and have shed some body fat.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

Yes. That’s not a legitimate question. I mean, that’s like asking what’s your favorite movie. Too many good ones to pick just one.

What is your Least favorite WOD?

When did you start doing CrossFit?

I first started doing Crossfit April 16, 2016. At the time, I had never heard of Crossfit  and wanted to know what it was all about. I have been doing personal training 3 times a week since then.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

I have worked with trainers on and off for the last 20 years. I would consider myself a non-athlete before starting Crossfit.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

My personal life has been in transition over the last year. Both of my parents are aging and require a lot more help. I am grateful to be able to help them in the later part of their lives as they have always helped me. Also i am grateful and happy to have become a father in the last year to a 31-year-old young man form Louisiana. My role as a father supersedes all my other roles in life. This by far, is the most important role in my life.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Get through the first 4-6 weeks.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

Doing 62 pull ups on my 62nd birthday.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Crossfit has really changed my life in a positive direction. especially with self confidence and relationships.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I was born and raised in Jackson and went to Jackson Prep, and then to Wheaton College, where I majored in Biology. I then moved back to Jackson and went into residency training in Psychiatry. I have practiced Adult Outpatient Psychiatry for the last 25 years. I am very content Being a psychiatrist; I am grateful for the opportunity to help people on a daily basis.

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

I was so tired i ran into the wall taking a shower. I could not believe how difficult Crossfit was compared to other things that I had done.

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

My initial goal was to get ready for a difficult trip into the Republic of the Congo for my 60th birthday in order to see the western lowland gorillas. The most important goal that i have achieved was to do 62 pull ups on my 62nd birthday.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

Yes, the trip was great and I did 62 pull ups on my birthday. I did my first pull up in April of last year then 62 on my birthday in September.

Helen Bowen

March // 2018

Helen has an incredible attitude and is always very positive when she comes in the gym. She is very open and vulnerable about her struggles and why she comes to Coyote, and her openness really helps other athletes who are going through the same thing. Helen is very consistent and gives her best effort every day she comes in the gym. She also sets a great example for her family as she has gotten her husband, Alan, and her son, John-David, into CrossFit as well. We are so glad to have Helen as a part of the Coyote family.

When did you start doing CrossFit?

I started CrossFit last November. I have never consistently worked out in my life. After being married for less than a year, I could see that I needed to make a change. My husband and my friend, Monica, helped push me to give CrossFit a shot.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

Before CrossFit, I was going to HotWorx periodically and Orange Theory once a week. I didn’t have a real routine, and I wasn’t pushing myself when I was at those classes.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I am I absolutely love hot pickles! They’re kind of a big Dill…

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Just carve out a specific class time you can go to and just keep showing up. Don’t worry what your score might be, just make sure you walk through the gym doors. We are all here at different levels and are trying to reach different goals. No one is judging you here.

I would also like to add that having a foam roller at your house for the first few months will save you!

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

Recently, I did a partner workout with Angie Chance. She and I had our workout scaled, as needed. We also divided the reps to help each other out. I did the running and Angie did more box step-ups. In the end, we were shocked at what our score was. It was nice to have that kind of teamwork.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

The biggest difference has been how easy this pregnancy has been. My doctor has been thrilled with my test results and how I’ve been able to stay so active. I’ve also noticed how much easier I can lift heavy objects and my endurance has increased.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I am a Trust Administrator at Regions Bank. My husband and I have been married for a year and a half, and I am currently 6 months pregnant with our first child. For fun, we like to cook and take the boat out.  Most weekends revolve around us watching sports with friends and smoking meat.

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

“Is this what hell feels like?” I just remember that I couldn’t run 200 meters without feeling like I was going to pass out. I can’t believe how much stronger I have gotten since then.

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

I wanted to get stronger and lean out.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

Absolutely. I started seeing results rather quickly. Before I got pregnant, I had lost over 10lbs of body fat and I had gained around 5lbs of muscle mass.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

The majority of my diet! (Just kidding) No, I eat everything in moderation. I’m a burger, with a bun, kind-of-girl, so I use MyFitnessPal to track what I eat to not go overboard. In my opinion, there’s nothing better in this world than a scoop of Blue Bell ice cream on top of apple pie.

What is your least favorite WOD?

Anything with the assault bike – the name says it all.

What is your favorite WOD?

I enjoy the AMRAPs that involve running, rowing, and some weights.

-What is your least favorite lift?

Snatches and thrusters.

What is your favorite lift?

I like hang cleans and dead lifts.

Emily Carr

When did you start doing CrossFit?

I started doing CrossFit around October of 2018.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

I was a gymnast for about 10 years. After I quit, I tried dance and track but nothing really stuck before I tried CrossFit.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I have been homeschooled my entire life.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Leave any ego or fear at the door and just do it. I debated joining for a long time because I was scared and I regret not starting earlier. The athletes and coaches at Coyote are simply amazing and calmed all of my fears when I joined. Joining Coyote was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

All of the times that I simply didn’t think I could finish a workout, all of the other athletes and coaches were there to cheer me on. Finishing those extra tough workouts or getting a new PR is one of the best feelings in the world.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Starting CrossFit has affected my life positively in so many ways. It has given me more confidence in my everyday life. Seeing all of the women at Coyote has helped me realize that I would much rather be strong than super skinny. Being able to compete against myself has also made me a far better athlete than I was when I was solely focused on competing against others. Coyote has also become a place to relieve the stress and anxiety of high school. I am now much stronger physically and mentally than I was a year ago.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I will be a high school senior this fall. I live in Madison with my Mom, Dad, and two older brothers. My parents have always encouraged/made me and my siblings do some sort of sport and to be active. I now work as an instructor at the gym where I used to do gymnastics and I absolutely love teaching little kids. I also have a rescued pit mix named Vinny and he is my favorite thing in the entire world.

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

I vividly remember my first WOD and it was absolutely awful lol. I remember thinking, “this sucks” and “what have I gotten myself into” but as soon as I finished, I knew I was hooked.

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

My main goals when I joined Coyote were to just get stronger and to fall in love with a sport again. Soon after joining, though, I began having goals of lifting heavier weights and getting harder skills.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

Since joining Coyote, I have been stronger than I have in a long time and have finally found another sport that I love. I am also now doing skills and lifting weights that I once didn’t think I could do.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

My favorite cheat meal is probably Canes or Chick-Fil- A.

What is your favorite/LEast favorite WOD?

I can’t say that I have a favorite or least favorite WOD. But, I pretty much love any WOD with cleans, toes to bar, or any sort of handstand walk/push-up.

-What is your least favorite lift?

My least favorite is either front squats or thrusters. Hate those.

What is your favorite lift?

My favorite lift would have to be any type of clean.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

I was just a member of a local health club and I ran between 10-15 miles per week.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I have an unlimited amount of phrases I repeat. One of my most famous: here’s the deal.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Leave your ego at the front door give it your best effort!

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

The Steven Sahler vs Tim Bell bench press competition(I lost miserably), my first open workout, rowing a marathon and TTB!

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Definitely!!  Crossfit is more than just a workout, its community and family.  The relationships that I have developed because of Coyote are invaluable to me and my son. Most everything were a part of is because of Coyote.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I have a 4 year old son named Brooks. You will most likely see him at the gym on Saturday mornings leaving chalk drawings for Chris Allen to admire before he cleans the floor (Sorry Bro).  I’ve been in food sales for 7 years and I work for Sysco in Jackson. I played most sports growing up and after I realized I couldn’t hit a curveball and I was not that great as a goalie in soccer, I settled on football.  I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship to play at South Carolina for Lou Holtz.  I enjoy hunting and fishing during my down time, which is not very often these days.  I stay pretty busy with my son, work, and the gym.

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

Why did I let Steven Sahler talk me into this? And did I really sign up for a year?

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

At first it was just to prove to myself that I could do Crossfit and improve my overall physical health.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

I believe I have reached some of these goals .  When I started this year, I wanted to do the Open Rx and not scale any of the workouts and I did accomplish that this year.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

Milk and Cookies (Oreos)

When did you start doing CrossFit?

I started the on-ramp in February of 2016. Wow, has it been 2 years?

What were you doing before Crossfit?

Although I had always been a part of a gym, I hadn’t stepped foot in a gym in over a year before I started CrossFit.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I used to ride horses so my lower body strength is still disproportionate to my upper body strength, but I’m getting better.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Just do it! You don’t have to know what to do, there is always a scaled version and someone there to help.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

I started writing down my times/scores at about the 3 month mark. This year, I realized I shaved four minutes off “Helen.” Four minutes is a lot of time! I went from always finishing last to sometimes finishing first (scaled of course).

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Yes, I have more energy and I feel great.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I have two wonderful kids (Ella age 10 and Ryder age 5), and I’m engaged to be married to an amazing man (Bill Morris) on March 15th. My mother and I own a business (The Cotton Blossom Fabric Shoppe) where we sell fabric, sewing/embroidery machines and sergers. Most of my time is spent at the Shoppe but a few hours a month I’m at “my other job.” I’m a nurse practitioner but I only work part-time. We live on a farm where we have 7 horses, 2 cows, 5 dogs, 6 chickens and 2 cats. Yes, it is a zoo.

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

Yay! I didn’t die 😊

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

My goals were mostly to get healthy. I was diagnosed with a mild autoimmune disease and knew that many of the aspects of an unhealthy lifestyle could trigger further autoimmune disease development. It was a real wake up call. After a year at CrossFit and at age 39, my goal was to be “fit at 40.”

Have you achieved any of these goals?

Now at age 40, I’m not perfect but I’m in much better shape than I ever have been. I’ve also lost 15lbs.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Yep, CrossFit is difficult and challenging... and it doesn't really get easier.... you just get stronger, faster, and a more fit. So stick with it and be consistent.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

My family and I moved to the area in 2015. The welcoming atmosphere and the friendships made with the members and coaches at the gym really helped my wife and I to connect to the community and make friends. Coyote and its members have been a blessing to us.

When did you start doing CrossFit?

I guess it was about 4 years ago when I started CrossFit.  Coyote was in the old Swenson's location across from McAlister's at the time.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

The decade before CrossFit I had been cycling regularly. I had slowed down on riding the bike and had started installing my butt in a chair instead of exercising.  Son Jack wanted to take up with this new cult called CrossFit and my wife thought it would be a good father/son bonding experience.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I love sarcasm. I wish CrossFit had been a thing when I wore a younger man's clothes. I'm the chair of the Gravediggers Guild at the Chapel of the Cross here in Madison. Wait, you may already know these things about me.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Your time at Coyote will be worth it.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

Words from the wise - One of the first times I met Hunter's dad, Doug, he said to me, "It's better to be here going slow, than it is to not be here."  This has stuck with me, not only at CrossFit but in life.   Thx Doug!

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Well, I have enjoyed forming friendships because of and through CrossFit. Here at Coyote and when talking to a stranger. If you bring up CrossFit in a crowd at a social function, chances are that someone in that crowd does it, knows someone who does it, wants to do it or wants to talk about it.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I grew up in Jackson in the 60's on the campus of Millsaps College.  Married and moved to Madison in 1992. We have four kids, 3 girls and 1 boy, all college aged now.  Worked at Keifer's Restaurant during the 80's and 90's, and then again as a desperate housewife from 2005 until about 2012.  Cycled a lot as a kid, throwing newspapers from a bike throughout the Belhaven neighborhood then jumping on a road bike to tour the county.  Took up cycling again as an adult and road the bike throughout my 40's.  Mostly cycling on the road in groups. Have done a few century rides, including the "Hotter than Hell Hundred" in Wichita Falls Texas, 14,000+ riders (talk about "on your left"). Played football and soccer in high school and soccer in college.

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

After our first onramp WOD, which consisted of what is now considered the warm-up, I thought to myself, "Wholly Fudge" Only I didn't say Fudge, what the heck has happened to me?????

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

Lose some weight, feel stronger and bond with son Jack.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

Yes, I constantly feel sore but, so much stronger. I feel confident when lifting or moving things and stuff about the house.  Haven't really lost the weight I was hoping but I know I have replaced some fat with muscle. Also know my diet is unbecoming that of a true CrossFitter.  As for bonding with Jack, he quit CrossFit after a month. Couldn't keep up. Ha!  Just kidding, he was playing high school football and soccer and constantly working out at the school. So I have no idea why he wanted to start CrossFit, BUT, I'm so glad he did.  It has helped me feel stronger and better about myself.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

Annie,  hate getting that Annie pannie

What is your favorite WOD?

It's the one where I'm still breathing when it's over!!!

-What is your least favorite lift?

Can't really do a lot of the gymnastics moves and I possess a great deal of gravity, so probably anything that involves me lifting myself. pullups, muscle-ups, double unders.

What is your favorite lift?

Probably the Squat however, I really enjoy the flexibility aspects included in CrossFit. Functional Fitness is so important as we age!

Tell us a little about yourself

I've been married to Alan Bowen, also a Coyote member, for 10 years and have two sons, Kelly Bass, who is married to Julia, and John-David Bass, also a Coyote member.  I'm a pianist, vocalist and have been the Director of Music at my church, St. Luke's United Methodist in Fondren for 30 years. I also accompany 3 school choirs: Olde Towne Middle School, Germantown Middle School and Germantown High School. I retired in 2012 from Madison County Schools after 27 years of teaching elementary music.  Alabama Football is my favorite sport to watch! ROLL TIDE!!  I love tennis as well and hope to start playing again soon.  I adore dogs and have 3: a Shih Tzu, who is 18, a Schnoodle, who is my baby, and a black Lab mix, who is a rescue.

Any Special Memories from your time at Coyote?

I'll never forget the first time I was able to jump rope again.  I literally could not make my body jump off the ground at the beginning. I also couldn't do one sit up, so Chris put 50# weights on top of my feet to help me. When I did the first sit ups without the weights, I think I cried again-this time for joy!  When I lifted over 100 pounds the first time, it was so exciting and I got hooked on lifting. A few weeks ago, I was able to hang from a bar for almost 10 seconds.  That doesn't sound like a big deal probably, but it's huge for me!  There have been so many big milestones, that I can't remember them all.

has crossfit affected your life outside of the gym?

I can function so much better-physically and mentally! Life is hard! Everybody needs to workout to relieve that stress in order to find happiness!  I know without a doubt that God led me into Coyote that day in June 2015.  Chris was at the desk and the passion that he had for Crossfit reached out to me.  I didn't think I had enough money to do it, but I did it anyway and it changed my life in so many ways for the better!

What advice would you give to someone just starting crossfit?

LISTEN TO THE COACHES AND DO EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAY!  Also, get rid of negative self talk and try to be patient with yourself.  Chris told me this: "Would you talk that way to John-David or your friends? Then, don't do it to yourself."  Such wise counsel!

what were you doing before crossfit?

NOTHING!! I was depressed.  I worked 3 jobs most of my working life and was exhausted when I retired from teaching.  I basically sat down for 3 years, did my church job and ate.  I was the biggest I had ever been in my life and could barely walk up the stairs from my office at church to the organ bench in the choir loft.  It was awful!

whats something we might not know about you?

I raised horses most of my young life and really miss riding!  I loved singing in the Mississippi Opera in the 1980's.  The actor, Judge Reinhold, from The Santa Clause movies, came to my class in 1996 and helped my kids learn more about acting as we prepared our annual musical.  His nephew was my student at the time.  It was great fun!

what were your goals when you joined coyote?

Hunter told our On Ramp class that he was going to ask us our reason for joining at the end of the 2 weeks.  My reason was simply not to die young.  I wanted to lose weight and feel strong again.

have you achieved any of these goals?

Yes! I lost 45 pounds in about 9 months and felt so much better physically and mentally!  However, I have had some set backs.  I had to have emergency surgery for a strangulated umbilical hernia that I had for many years and had to have half my abdomen covered with mesh.  I was out of Crossfit for almost 4 months and got depressed again, slipped back into some old bad habits and gained some of the weight back during recovery. Chris helped me start again very slowly and little by little with much scaling to the WODS, I was back on the right path. Then in late 2017, I started having severe pain going down the back of my left leg into to the back of my knee. Chris told me to see a physical therapist, Dr. Bill Thomas, who found that my lower spine is compressed some because of a broken tail bone I got in 2009. Between that and the piriformis muscle irritating my sciatic nerve, I could not bend my leg and it would give out. I had to be out again for 3 months for treatment.  Dr. Thomas helped me so much and gave me stretches and special ab exercises to do. Once he released me to come back to class, I started over again and with Chris and Hunter's help, patience and excellent training I am able to do most things without pain!  I'm feeling strong and am starting to lose weight again!  I COULD NOT HAVE DONE THIS WITHOUT THEM AND AM SO GRATEFUL FOR THEIR HELP IN MY LIFE!

what were your thoughts after your first workout?

I could hardly breathe, had to take my inhaler for asthma and was disgusted with myself.  I couldn't believe that I had let myself get that way. I cried because I felt so terrible about myself.

When did you start doing CrossFit?

April of 2015, so 3 years ago.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

Nothing, I was in awful shape and didn’t take care of myself.  Every year or so I would tell myself I was going to get back in shape.  I would join a local gym and go for about 2-3 months then fall off.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I am a bit of a closet nerd.  I love videogames and reading about theoretical physics.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Listen to the coaches.  It’s really that simple.  Don’t worry about how much weight your moving or how many reps you’re doing just focus on technique and mobility.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

This is an easy one.  Seeing how encouraging and excited everyone gets for you when you hit a new personal best or when you are grinding out a tough workout.  This really stands out to me because the enjoyment of these experiences would be pretty mediocre without the people around you.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Yes, I used to have back and hip problems from sitting all day in my office, now all of that is gone.  I can also notice a huge difference when playing with my kids.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I married my high school sweetheart, Lauren.  We have been blessed with two awesome kids, James and Elizabeth. We are members of Madison Heights Church.  I try to play golf every once in a while, although it’s not very pretty.

IMG_0905.jpg

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

It was 4 rounds of 400m runs and some box jumps.  I think I laid on the ground after the 2nd run and couldn’t finish.  I remember laying on the ground and realizing how bad of shape I was in.  I also realized that an all-out sprint on the first 400m was a terrible strategy.

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

My primary goal was to try to meet new people as I moved here from Dallas and didn’t know a lot of people.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

Definitely, I have a lot of friendships that extend outside of the gym and as a side benefit I’m in the best shape of my life.

To stick with it and don’t hesitate to ask the coaches for help if you are struggling!  Even if you can only come once or twice a week at first, keep doing that consistently!! Celebrate even the smallest improvements that you make.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

I competed in the Open for the first time this year and it was an awesome experience!

No matter how many names are up on the whiteboard, the biggest competition you have is yourself. Once you embrace that, every day you come to the gym will be rewarding.

When did you start doing CrossFit?

About two years ago

What were you doing before Crossfit?

I was working out in a traditional gym, which I had done since I was about 19 years old.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

The first time I attempted a squat max, I folded like a paper napkin under a 185 lbs bar.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

It may be painful at first as your body adjusts to the new movements, but stick with it and don’t miss workouts because you are sore. Your body will adjust and it will feel much better after you have being doing it a while. I was really surprised that merely continuing to work out actually caused my aches and pains to go away rather than get worse. I’m sure that this is not always the case depending on the nature and severity of the pain, but this was the case for me. The first two months caused my body to hurt pretty badly (including my knees), but I now have very little pain at all, at least not on a consistent basis. Crossfit caused me to think of my pre-CF body as somewhat of a rusty bolt, and doing all of the stretching, lifting, and new movements help break the rust away and cause the bolt to be able to move like it was designed to do. Looking back now, although I have worked out for years in traditional gyms, I think of all of the movements that my body would likely have never done without Crossfit and how that sedentariness would have detrimentally affected my body and health.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

I remember when I was first able to do a relatively long string of double-unders. And, by “relatively long,” I mean “pretty short, but better than two.” I think I told the instructor to watch as if I was a 9 year old kid. Unfortunately, the skill leaves and returns on a regular basis.

IMG_1509.jpg

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

It has reduced my anxiety and stress levels.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I enjoy eating while laying on my side resting on my elbow, much like the ancient Greeks and Romans did while wearing loin cloths. I also sometimes wear a loin cloth while doing it.

IMG_1504.jpg

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

Literally, can I handle this kind of suffering on a regular basis?

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

To reduce my body fat percentage, get in better overall shape, and reduce anxiety.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

Absolutely. I am not where I want to be, but CrossFit has forced my body to do things that it would have otherwise never done.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

A giant, juicy hamburger.

What is your least favorite WOD?

Anything that includes thrusters.

When did you start doing CrossFit?

I started CrossFit in June 2014.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

I played softball in high school and competitively in the summer. I did strength and conditioning for school ball and spent the better part of summer weekends in a squat.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

That’s interesting? Hmm. I have an extra bone in my right foot.

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

I’m convinced that if you can find a church or a CrossFit box, you can find a sense of community. WODs may be rough or you might not be feeling it on any given day, but the community of folks at Coyote make those days worth it. Lean into not only the fitness aspects of CrossFit but the character of the community of which you are a part!

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

One of my favorite memories is from January 2016. I got my first strict hand stand push-up without a plate on my 20th birthday which also happened to be the day West Virginia beat #1 ranked Kansas in men’s basketball. It was a fun day all around. There was one day I was the only one doing the workout in the class so I did it with a couple of the competitor guys. They kicked by butt, but it was a lot of fun!!

IMG-0959.jpg

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Definitely. One of my dad’s favorite sayings is “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” In a workout you have to judge how hard you can push but still be able to maintain the overall pace you want to keep for the WOD. That translates so well to life. Whether it’s getting through a week of tests and presentations or just day-to-day things, I find the logic and approach to CrossFit helps me take things one bite at a time.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

I’m from Madison, and I just graduated from Millsaps College with a major in biochemistry and minor in history. I played softball through my sophomore year of college and spent many a weekend with my mom and dad traveling to tournaments around the southeast. Now we like to take day trips to Baton Rouge and Tuscaloosa to watch games when we can. I’m on only child, so my mom, dad, and I are a close bunch. Mrs. Carrie and I frequently talk about our love of Hamilton and the West Wing when we are in the gym at the same time. I am a proud West (by God) Virginia mountaineer!

IMG-0960.jpg

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

I breathe really loudly, so I was really worried about what the other folks in the box would think when they heard me breathing.

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

I wanted some form of conditioning that would hold me accountable and have me prepared for conditioning tests in the fall. Beyond that, I had seen the enthusiasm that friends had for CrossFit, and I wanted to experience that for myself.

Have you achieved any of these goals?

For sure. I was ready for most anything that coaches pulled out of their hats for conditioning in college. I love CrossFit more now than when I started, and I am no less enthusiastic about getting to go in for a WOD.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

I’m a sucker for a peanut butter and jelly on raisin bread. Or waffles.

What is your least favorite WOD?

Any workout with wall balls.

What is your favorite WOD?

I like Fran or anything with heavy weight.

What were you doing before Crossfit?

Running mostly

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I am very, very afraid of heights! Like, freeze in place kind of scared!

What advice would you give someone just starting at Coyote?

Don’t worry about comparing your score to others on the board. Workout with a weight you are comfortable with and worry more about your technique than your final score.

Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time at Coyote?

Learning how to do a double under - thought it would never happen! Plus, Brian can’t do them so I can brag on that one :)

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

I have much less anxiety and stress as the workouts have proven to be a stress and anxiety release for me.

Tell us a little about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)

Married to Brian, 3 sons - Bryson, Brayden, and Brennan. I am a middle school math teacher at MRA, my favorite sport to watch is baseball ,but I played basketball in college. I enjoy kayaking, drawing, and doing home improvement projects. I am an avid (maybe obnoxious) Chicago Cubs fan :)

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

At least I didn’t throw-up!

What were your goals when you joined Coyote?

Set an example for my boys on living a healthy lifestyle and getting these old knees back to working!

Have you achieved any of these goals??

Yes, our whole family enjoys CrossFit now, and my knees have never felt better. I can run longer and without pain.

What is your favorite cheat meal?

Hmmm, think I cheat every meal, but soda is my kryptonite
