Over the years we have had thousands of people come through the doors of Coyote. There are some people who have been members since the day we opened, some that have only been to a few class, and everyone in between. After seeing so many people you start to pick up on what the people who are making progress are doing, as well as what the people who are struggling to make progress aren’t. After all of these years I keep coming back to the same thing-the people who make progress are the people who show up every day.
So many times we can overcomplicate things. We can think that we need to follow this very advanced training program, or have this super intricate diet, or do this very advanced stretch that no one else knows about. We think that the answers are out there and just hidden from us, but the reality is the answer is right in front of us. We don’t need all of these fancy programs. We don’t need a diet based off our DNA. We don’t need the perfect mobility for our body type. We need to show up more.
Life can get crazy. We can start the day with all of the best intentions in the world to get what we want done, but then we walk into work and immediately start putting out fires. Before we can turn around twice three hours have passed us by and we haven’t even started on what we planned on doing. I get it. It happens to all of us. I think the answer to this is to make time for what really matters. If we can think about what will matter in five years we might structure our day a little bit differently. We need to make time the things that will matter in the long term. We KNOW that developing a fitness routine now is imperative for the rest of our lives. It will help us live longer and live better. The urgency of the now, however, can keep us from getting in that routine.
How do we develop the consistency? I think we have to schedule it. Think of your workout as an appointment with yourself. Put it on your calendar and schedule everything else around it. Over the years the people who I have seen make the most progress are the ones who show up to the same classes on the same days, week in and week out. If it is Monday at noon, or Thursday at 5:30 AM, or Tuesday at 4:30 PM, there are certain people who will be there, rain or shine. These are the people who make progress consistently. It’s not that their schedule is any less busy. EVERYONE is busy. Thus is life. The people who make progress are the ones who make their health and fitness a priority, no matter how busy their day gets or what life throws at them.
If you are struggling to make progress then take a step back and focus on one thing. Just show up every day. Make an effort to do something for your health and fitness every single day. Schedule your workouts on your calendar each week and don’t miss them, no matter what happens. In a few months you will be amazed by how much progress you can make by just showing up every day.
